Motorcycling with a GoPro

Like I'm sure many of you have done when I got into motorcycle touring I went out and brought a GoPro. I off course wanted to be able to record my trips in stunning HD and the GoPro Max I've allows me to record my trips in 360 and act like I've got a professional camera man with me!

My GoPro Max

I of course took it out on my first trip and set it up on the back of my bike and pressed the record button. Got to my first stop to find that the battery had died. Not a problem I thought, I've got spare batteries and it will have captured the good stuff. So I rinsed and repeated this till I ran out of batteries.

So at the end of the day I eagerly connected my GoPro to download the footage only to find I had fours hours of footage. And what did the footage consist of. Me travelling along at points some lovely roads but at other points boring long stretches of dual carriageways, towns, motorways. Now I of course couldn't just send these to family and friends to show off my adventures, nobody wants that so I had to spend hours going through all the footage finding the good bits. And to top it all off because I'd ran the batteries flat I then missed some excellent parts later on.

Some of you might say what about putting it within reach of you from the saddle but I find that the best footage for me was from my pannier and no matter how much I contorted myself I could not reach it easily, yet alone whilst riding.

So another plan was needed. Hence my two most recent purchases. Firstly a battery charger, this allows me to top up the batteries whilst they're in the top box from a power bank I've got and secondly the more useful is a Remote for the GoPro. This allows me to not only stop and start recording from my handlebars but also turn the GoPro on and off remotely to save battery. I have this on a lanyard round my neck and it easily works with my glove hands.

The added bonus of this set up is I can put two batteries on charge when I stop for the night. Normally I put the first two on charge when I go for a meal and then swap over the next two when I go to bed. Otherwise I can only charge the one that is in the GoPro at the time.

As such I now only record the footage I want where it is interesting and useful. In my opinion money well spent
